History
Kenwa Mabuni studied under Anko Itosu (Shuri-te lineage) and Kanryo Higaonna (Naha-te lineage) - and the name Shito-Ryu is formed from the characters of both masters. That is why it has the largest kata repertoire in karate: over fifty forms preserved from both Okinawan traditions.
Principles
- The largest kata repertoire of any style - preservation as method
- A synthesis of Shuri-te linearity and Naha-te circularity
- Fluid transitions between high and low stances according to distance
- Bunkai - studying the real application of every movement in the kata
